Getting started

Is Netly free? Do I need an account?

Netly is free to download and use, and there is no account. Install it, tap the blue button, and you have your first result in about 30 seconds. We never ask for your name, email or phone number.

How long does a test take and how much data does it use?

A Speed Test takes about 30 seconds and moves roughly 12 MB. A Video Test takes about 17 seconds and streams a 15 MB sample clip. On mobile data, that is about the cost of loading a few Instagram posts. You can see exactly how much Netly has used in Stats → Data used for testing.

Why does the app ask for my location? I’m testing my Wi-Fi, not traveling.

Because Apple and Google only let an app read the Wi-Fi network name (“FPT_Home 5G”) if it holds location permission. Netly uses the permission for that one purpose, only while the app is open, and never records or sends coordinates. If you decline, everything still works — History simply shows “Wi-Fi” instead of the name.

Android asked me to let Netly “make and manage phone calls”. Why?

That is Android’s wording for the Phone permission, which Netly needs to tell 4G from 5G and to detect dual-SIM phones. Netly never places calls and never reads your contacts. If you decline, mobile tests are labeled “Mobile” instead of 4G/5G.

Can I run a test on mobile data?

Yes. Netly labels the test with the network type (4G, 5G) so you can compare it with your Wi-Fi later. Keep the data cost above in mind if you are on a small plan.

Does Netly use a lot of battery?

No. Netly only works while you run a test (about 30 seconds) and never measures anything in the background. On Android, the optional Offline alert just listens for the connection dropping, which costs almost nothing.

Will a test eat my mobile data?

Each Speed Test moves about 12 MB and each Video Test about 15 MB — ten tests are roughly the size of one short HD video. Stats → Data used for testing shows the running total, split by Wi-Fi and mobile.

Does it work on iPad or Android tablets?

Netly is designed for phones. It runs on iPad in iPhone-compatibility mode; Wi-Fi-only tablets show “Wi-Fi” for every test and skip the mobile-network features.

Does Netly work with VoiceOver or TalkBack?

Yes. Every screen is labeled for screen readers, the test button announces its duration and data cost, live values are read out at most every two seconds, and Reduce Motion turns off the gauge animation. Dynamic Type and large font sizes are supported.

Reading your results

What do download, upload and ping mean?

Download is how fast data reaches your phone — it decides whether video streams and web pages load without waiting. Upload is how fast data leaves your phone — it matters for video calls, sending photos and cloud backups. Ping (latency) is the round-trip delay to the server in milliseconds — lower is better; it decides how “snappy” games and calls feel.

What does the verdict like “4K streams fine, video calls too” mean?

It is a plain-language summary of the numbers, using these thresholds: 4K streams fine, video calls too = download ≥ 25 Mbps and ping under 50 ms · HD streams fine, video calls may stutter = 10–25 Mbps · Enough for browsing and messaging; video may pause = 3–10 Mbps · Very weak — try again closer to the router = under 3 Mbps or ping over 150 ms. The verdict describes the moment of the test, not your plan.

My result is much lower than the speed my provider sells me. Is the app wrong?

Usually not. The advertised speed is the maximum at the modem; what reaches your phone depends on Wi-Fi distance and walls, the number of devices sharing the connection, the Wi-Fi standard of your phone and router, and the time of day. Test again standing next to the router, on the 5 GHz network if you have one, with other devices idle. If that result is close to the plan speed, the bottleneck is Wi-Fi, not your provider.

Why do I get different numbers each time?

Internet speed changes second by second — that is why the testing screen shows a live chart. Differences of 10–20% between tests are normal. Look at the trend in History over several days rather than one number.

What are jitter and packet loss?

Jitter is how much the ping varies from packet to packet; under 10 ms is good for calls and games. Packet loss is the share of packets that never arrived; anything above 1% will be felt in calls. Both are shown live during the test and in the details of every saved test.

Which server does Netly test against?

The nearest available measurement server; its name and latency are shown on the testing screen (for example “HCM · 4 ms”). Testing against a nearby server measures your connection, not the distance to some faraway data center.

What does “Drop from peak” mean in test details?

How far the average download speed fell below the fastest moment of the test, as a percentage. A large drop usually means an unstable Wi-Fi signal or a congested network.

Will a VPN change my results?

Yes. With a VPN on, the test measures the path through the VPN server, which is usually slower and farther away. Turn the VPN off to measure your own connection, or leave it on to see what your apps actually get.

Why is my result different from my provider’s app or other speed-test apps?

Different apps use different servers, test lengths and averaging. Netly reports the average of the steady part of the transfer to the fastest nearby server. Compare trends within one app over several days rather than single numbers across apps.

Video Test

What does the Video Test measure that a speed test doesn’t?

A speed test measures raw capacity; the Video Test plays a real clip and measures what you actually experience: load time (how long before playback starts), buffering (total seconds the video froze) and smooth playback (share of time it played without interruption). A connection can have decent speed and still stutter if latency spikes.

What is a good Video Test result?

Load time under 2 seconds, zero buffering and smooth playback above 90% means the resolution tested (for example 720p) will play comfortably. Between 75% and 90% you will notice occasional pauses; below 75% drop to a lower quality setting in your streaming app.

Why is the test at 720p and not 4K?

720p keeps the test short (about 17 seconds) and cheap on data (about 15 MB) while still exposing buffering problems. If 720p plays with zero buffering and your download speed is above 25 Mbps, 4K will normally be fine too.

History, Stats and your data

Where is my history stored? Can I see it on another phone?

Only on your phone, in the app’s private storage. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no cloud history and no sync between devices. If you restore a full device backup, your history comes back with it.

How do I delete a test?

Open the test from History and tap Delete test, then confirm. To delete everything at once, uninstall the app.

What do the labels Indoors / Outdoors do?

They let you compare like with like — for example, Wi-Fi in the living room versus 4G in the street. Netly asks once after each Speed Test; you can change the label any time in Test details.

Does Netly monitor my network in the background?

No. Stats are calculated only from the tests you choose to run. Netly never measures anything on its own — the only background work is finishing a Speed Test you started and, on Android, the optional Offline alert, which just listens for the connection dropping. It does not track your usage and does not read other apps’ data. That is also why “Data used for testing” shows Netly’s own usage, not your whole phone’s.

Does Netly sell my data or show ads?

No and no. Netly shows no ads during a test, contains no advertising or analytics SDK, and your test results never leave your phone. Read the full Privacy Policy — it is written to be read.

Notifications

How often will Netly send reminders?

If you switch on Test reminders (iOS): at most twice a week, never between 10 PM and 8 AM your local time, and we stop automatically after three in a row go unopened — switching the setting off and on again restarts them. Turn it off in Settings any time.

What are Offline alerts (Android)?

A local notification the moment your phone loses its connection, generated by Android itself — nothing is sent to us. To avoid spam on a flaky network, alerts are grouped and sent at most once every 15 minutes. Turn them off in Settings or directly from the notification.

I turned on reminders but nothing arrived.

Check that Netly is allowed to notify you in your phone’s Settings, and that the switch in Netly → Settings is on. Reminders are also held back during quiet hours (10 PM–8 AM), capped at two a week, and stop after three go unopened — switch the setting off and on to restart them.

Who’s on my Wi-Fi? (iOS)

What does the Wi-Fi scan show?

How many devices are currently connected to your Wi-Fi, each device’s local IP address, and which one is your router and which is this phone. If you declined Local Network access or you are on mobile data, the screen shows “-” and a hint to fix it in Settings. You open it from the Speed Test tab, below your last result. The scan runs for about five seconds when you tap Scan network and stores nothing after you leave the screen.

Why can’t I see device names or brands?

iOS does not give apps reliable access to device names or hardware addresses, and guessing would show you wrong information. Netly shows only what it can verify: the count, the IP addresses and the router.

I see more devices than I expected. Is someone stealing my Wi-Fi?

Not necessarily — smart TVs, speakers, plugs, cameras and old phones all count. Turn devices off one by one and rescan to identify them. If a device remains unexplained, change your Wi-Fi password in your router settings.

Is this available on Android?

Not in the current version. It is planned for a future update.

Troubleshooting

The test says “Connection dropped mid-test”.

Your phone lost its connection during the test. Any phase already finished (for example ping) is kept. Check Wi-Fi or mobile data, then tap Resume test — Netly reruns the interrupted phase and keeps the finished ones. If you leave with Back to Speed Test instead, nothing is saved.

The Speed Test button can’t be tapped.

The phone has no connection at the moment. Connect to Wi-Fi or turn on mobile data and the button becomes active again.

No test server answers.

If no measurement server answers, Netly shows the “Connection dropped mid-test” screen within a few seconds. Check your connection and tap Resume test — Netly picks the fastest available server again.

History shows “Wi-Fi” instead of my network name.

Location permission is off, or set to Approximate (Android) / Precise Location off (iOS). iOS: Settings → Netly → Location → While Using the App, Precise Location on. Android: Settings → Apps → Netly → Permissions → Location → Use precise location. Also check that Location is switched on for the whole phone. Older tests keep their existing label.

Can I leave the app while a test runs?

Yes — for a Speed Test. On iPhone (iOS 16.1 or later) progress shows in the Dynamic Island and on the Lock Screen; on Android, in a notification. A Video Test is different: leaving the app cancels it, so stay for the 17 seconds.

How do I change the app language?

Settings → App language. Netly supports 20 languages, including right-to-left layouts for Arabic, Urdu and Persian. The setting is synced with your phone’s per-app language preference.
